Next on the Tee
With the fall finale at hand, the University of Michigan women's golf team travels to Kiawah Island, S.C., Sunday and Monday (Oct. 28-29) for the 2012 Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate. The two-day, 54-hole event will feature an 18-team field and be played at the Oak Point Golf Course. Scoring for the Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate will be five players; count the low four scores each round playing in threesomes. Selected teams, including the Wolverines, will be allowed an invited individual. Oak Point will be set up for a par 72 at 5,906 yards.

The Tournament Field
There will be 18 teams in the field for the 2012 Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate, including: Augusta State, Bucknell, Campbell, College of Charleston, Charleston Southern, The Citadel, Coastal Carolina, East Tennessee State, Elon, Georgia State, Jacksonville State, James Madison, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, Richmond, South Florida and Xavier.

The Tournament Schedule
Saturday, Oct. 27 -- Practice Round (tee times), U-M at 10:40 and 10:50 a.m.
Sunday, Oct. 28 -- First Round (18) begins with an 8:45 a.m. shotgun
Sunday, Oct. 28 -- Second Round (18) continuous play following conclusion of first round
Monday, Oct. 29 -- Final Round (18) begins with a 9 a.m. shotgun

The Wolverine Lineup
Michigan will field a lineup of five starters and one individual at the 2012 Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate. U-M's sophomore class heads up the squad as Linda Luo (Bradenton, Fla./Lakewood Ranch HS), Lauren Grogan (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson HS) and Devon Compton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Stoney Creek HS) make up the top three starters for the Wolverines. Junior Alicia Weber (Northville, Mich./Northville HS) returns to the starting lineup, while freshman Catherine Peters (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence HS) rounds out the U-M five-player team. Juniors Yugene Lee (Athens, Ga./Oconee County HS) and Chelsea Pezzola (Bradenton, Fla./Saint Stephens Episcopal Prep) will travel as the Wolverine individuals.

WOLVERINE BITES

? Michigan will close its fall season playing at the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate in Kiawah Island, S.C. It has been eight years since the Wolverines played in the College of Charleston's event. In 2004, U-M had two top-five finishing Wolverines -- Ali Stinson, tying for 3rd, and Brianna Broderick, tying for 5th, -- to help them to a runner-up finish with an 885 team total.

? Michigan has used three different starting lineups this season as seven Wolverines have received a starting nod. Lauren Grogan and Linda Luo are the only Wolverines to have started all four events this season. The duo is 1-2 in scoring average, with Luo leading U-M at 76.00, while Grogan is at 77.89.

? Linda Luo has two top-10 finishes -- finishing third at the Mary Fossum Invitational and tying for sixth at the Wolverine Invitational.

? Lauren Grogan posted her first career top-five finish, placing exactly fifth at the Wolverine Invitational. Her prior best finish was tying for ninth at last year's Big Ten Championships (April 27-29, 2012).

? With her even-par 71 in the second round of the Wolverine Invitational, Devon Compton set a new career-best single-round tally. She bettered her 73 in the second round of the 2011 Bettie Lou Evans Fall Invitational.

? Alicia Weber captured her first career medalist honor by winning the Wolverine Invitational, playing as an individual. A transfer from Cal Poly, her prior best finish was runner-up at the 2010 Lamkin Grip/Cal Poly Invitational.

? With the win at the Wolverine Invitational, Michigan recorded its 32nd team title in program history and second under head coach Cheryl Stacy. In 28 women's golf events played on the U-M Golf Course, Michigan has claimed 10 team titles and nine individual titles. This season, Michigan finished with six players among the top 20 -- four starters and two individuals.

? Michigan will carry nine players this season, none of which will comprise a senior class. The Wolverines will carry four juniors, three sophomores and two freshmen.

? Michigan has been represented in regional competition by the team or an individual in 10 of the last 12 seasons, making team appearances in 2001, '02, '05, '07, '09, '11 and '12.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

On becoming a solid member of the lineup in her second season ... "This season has been a lot better than last year. I started out stronger and better and have been playing more consistently throughout the rounds, including qualifiers and tournaments. I think that's given me a boost going into this last tournament of the fall."

On what has been the biggest change from a season ago ... "My swing and getting the contact I need and being down the middle instead of in the trees helps a lot. Also, working on my short game and getting up and down. Something we've been concentrating on a lot is the short game. I think that really helped."

On assessing the team ... "This team has great potential. The last tournament didn't go so well, but we're looking for improving scores in this tournament. I think we can become one of the top teams out there in this tournament. We're looking for a good finish to the fall season so we can get off the spring season strong."

On what makes Midwest golf special ... "I like the courses around here. Everything is just fairways and greens. You have to have more targeting and more of a game plan being as there are more trees and they are more undulating and elevated. You have to know your clubs."

On if playing in Midwest golf makes you a stronger golfer ... "Yeah, that's definitely a help to us because whenever we get bad conditions and thick rough and things like that, we're prepared, we know what to do. The schools down South don't really practice in that like we do. We'll practice and the cup will be filled to the brim with water and we'll still be out there putting balls and the splash of water comes up from the golf ball going in."

On the strangest thing to happen to her on the golf course ... "One time I was playing in a tournament at my course at home (Boulder Point) when I was younger. These boys came off of the ninth hole dancing in their swimsuits messing around. We hadn't seen them because it was a dogleg right and we weren't looking to the left. I hit mine in the fairway and the other girl went just in the rough. They came over, looked at our balls, grabbed mine and ran away. I was in a tournament. I was doing well. I was even par. I didn't even know how to play that. Eventually, it was settled as an animal rule and I was able to place the ball back at the nearest point. That was interesting to me."

On what people need to know about her ... "I'm pretty open about everything. However, one golf thing is I carry a ton of golf balls in my bag. Most people carry six and when I got to Michigan, I didn't know any better. I carried a dozen for 18. Then I carried 15 for 36 just in case. Normally, you just have six golf balls. A dozen or so is a bit extreme, but everyone makes fun of me on the team for that. But I won't get disqualified and I'll be prepared. If you lose that many golf balls you should just quit. That's what my coaches say. "

LAST TIME OUT (Wolverine Invitational, Sat-Sun., Sept. 22-23)
Michigan posted a 947 event total to finish 18th at the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational at UNC's Finley Golf Course. In a field that included 12 top-50 ranked teams and six among the top 24, Lauren Grogan was U-M's top finishing individual, tying for 63rd at 233 (78-77-78), while Linda Luo tied for 67th a shot back at 234 (81-76-77). Rounding out U-M's starters were Devon Compton in 81st at 237 (79-77-81), Yugene Lee finishing 93rd at 248 (81-74-93) and Alyssa Shimel placing 96th at 258 (86-84-88). [ Recap ]
