MORTLAKE, England (AP) ? The Boat Race, one of England's most historic sporting events, was brought to a standstill on Saturday when a protester jumped into the River Thames and narrowly avoided being struck by the oars of the Oxford and Cambridge crews.

Race umpire John Garrett halted the race around 2? miles into the 4?-mile course in front of thousands of shocked spectators along the river banks in southwest London, before the swimmer ? who was wearing a wetsuit ? was collected by a police boat and arrested on suspicion of a public order offense.

"They almost took his head off," said Sergeant Chris Tranter of the Metropolitan Police.

The protester, Trenton Oldfield, claimed responsibility for the stunt on a blog entitled Elitism Leads To Tyranny, calling it was an act of civil disobedience.

After the race was restarted 31 minutes later halfway along the course, Oxford's German rower Dr. Hanno Wienhausen lost half of his oar after the crews clashed ? allowing Cambridge to cruise to victory against seven oarsmen. A margin of victory wasn't given by officials.

Assistant umpire Matthew Pinsent, a winner of four Olympic gold medals, was credited with spotting the intruder, avoiding a potential disaster with the two crews heading straight for him.

The man ducked his head under the water ? narrowly missing the oars of the Oxford crew, which was just ahead at the time.

"I saw a head," Cambridge's American oarsman Steve Dudek said. "I looked over and thought they had lost a guy (out of the Oxford boat)."

The man resurfaced, with a big smile across his face, and was led away once on dry land wrapped in a red blanket.

"Officers from the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) Marine Policing Unit (MPU) attended and took the man back to the riverside where he was arrested for a section 5 public order offence," a statement from Scotland Yard read. "He has been taken into custody at a west London police station."

To add to the drama, Oxford bow man Dr. Alexander Woods was taken to nearby Charing Cross Hospital after appearing to collapse after the race. Paramedics later said Woods was in a stable condition but would be kept at the hospital for monitoring.

The reason for his collapse remains unknown.

"This really was the product of the most extraordinary and unfortunate chain of events that have conspired against us," said Oxford coach Sean Bowden.

The trophy presentation was delayed while doctors attended to Woods, a 27-year-old studying medicine and in his 10th year at Oxford.

"I guess you can only imagine the desperation that Alex must have been in ... that's probably how he ended up pushing himself beyond his limits," Bowden said.

Garrett said Woods was receiving "the best possible medical care."

"At this time, Boat Race Company Limited's concern is for Alex's well-being," organizers said. "Alex's family are with him."

In confusion, the two crews floated idly, not knowing whether the race would be restarted from the start, abandoned altogether or simply that the crews would continue from where they stopped.

At the end of the race, Zoe De Toledo ? Oxford's first female cox in 12 years ? appealed for the race to be rerun because there was too much wash on the course after the postponement. Her appeal was turned down by Garrett, who said Oxford was to blame for the clash and had to bear the consequences.

Cambridge rowing president Dave Nelson said all interruptions took the gloss off the victory.

"With all the hoohah and the restart and the clash it was a pretty dramatic race," Nelson said. "We're more worried about the Oxford guys right now and we'll reflect later on what's gone on."

Cambridge extended its lead in the overall series to 81-76, but that was lost in all the drama of an eventful 158th edition of the race, which dates back to 1829 and is broadcast live or in highlights in an estimated 200 countries.

The last time the race had to be restarted was in 2001 when there was a clash of blades and an oar was lost by one of the crews.

Dufner making a name for himself in majors

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) ? Jason Dufner didn't waste any time giving himself another shot in a major.

When last seen on a big stage, Dufner lost a five-shot lead with four holes to play and wound up losing the PGA Championship in a playoff. Nearly eight months later, Dufner walked off the 18th green Friday at the Masters and saw his name atop the leaderboard.

Despite a bogey from the bunker on his last hole, he shot a 2-under 70 and shared the lead with Fred Couples.

"I had some really nice rounds at the PGA," Dufner said. "Didn't quite work out, but carried over into this year. It gave me confidence that I can compete and play at a high level out here and do really nice things."

Dufner has done a lot of nice things over the last few years, which explains why he is No. 31 in the world ranking. He just hasn't done anything to distinguish himself ? like winning.

The Masters is his 162nd start on the PGA Tour, and the 35-year-old from Alabama remains the only player in the top 50 who has never won on any recognized tour around the world.

Dufner is not likely to get much recognition at Augusta National, except for the Southern fans crying out "War Eagle" to salute his days at Auburn. He shared the lead with Couples, one of the most popular figures at the Masters, if not all of golf.

Everything about Couples looks cool.

Dufner looks like he doesn't have a pulse. With a plug of tobacco jutting from his lower lip, he shows no emotion over a birdie or bogey. He decided to take a rest going into the Masters and didn't even come to the course on Wednesday. It sounded like an exciting day.

"I just hung out at the house," he said. "I had a couple of errands, picked up some dry cleaning, had to send something off. Watched the History Channel a good bit."

He tries to keep it simple on the golf course, too.

"I know the situation, and I'm playing a major, I'm playing at Augusta in the Masters," Dufner said. "As a player, I know everything that's going on. At times, I know that I am leading or behind or whatever it might be in that situation. I'm just trying to have a nice round of golf, play well, commit to my shots and let the rest take care of itself."

That seems to have worked the first two days.

Dufner quickly joined the leaders with back-to-back bogeys early in his round, only to lose it on one hole. With a wet, muddy lie short of the green on the par-3 fourth hole, he dumped his chip into a bunker and made double bogey.

"I just got in a bad situation," he said.

Dufner fought back, however, and tied for the lead again with birdies on the 13th and 14th. Despite missing a 6-foot birdie attempt on the par-5 15th, he stuffed his tee shot into about 4 feet on the 16th for birdie and the outright lead. It didn't last long. The 18th was playing into the wind, a tough finish, and Dufner found the bunker right of the green for his bogey.

No matter. He was in contention at another major; hopefully, the outcome might be a little different this time.

Dufner's meltdown was surprising in the PGA Championship just down the highway at Atlanta Athletic Club. He hit into the water on the 15th and scrambled for bogey, missed the green on the 16th for another bogey and three-putted the 17th for bogey.

What he remembers from that day was that he needed par on the 18th hole to force a playoff, and that's what he did. Keegan Bradley wound up beating him in the three-hole playoff.

And yes, he felt the nerves that afternoon in Atlanta, and he's sure to be feeling them again during the weekend at Augusta.

"There's a lot more going on out there than appears," he said. "I feel like I have the same emotions and same thought processes as a lot of guys, but I seem to not show it quite as well as some other players. It's just difficult. It's a test to yourself."

Mobile devices have exacerbated an always-on work culture where employees work anytime, anywhere. They've contributed to the blurred distinction between when you're "on the clock" and when you're not. Service industry professionals are especially tethered to these devices. There's an assumption that using smart devices boosts productivity, since they allow us to work constantly. But, we're also jeopardizing long-term productivity by eliminating predictable time off that ensures balance in our lives. Is the obsession of regularly checking email really helping anyone's bottom line? Are the unrealistic expectations these devices facilitate not setting staff up for burnout?

From my experience, this hyper-connectivity carries a cost to organizational productivity. Many months ago, in my Africa-based startup, my top managers decided to adopt a business engagement process where customers and staff could reach them 24/7. There was a perception that if a customer or a colleague needed something and couldn't get it immediately, the firm would not be taken seriously. The staff was under intense pressure to be available whenever anyone called ? it was simply expected. Six months later, we noticed that customer complaints were actually up, and team morale was down.

So, why were we spoiling dinner time for each other with calls that could have waited until the next business day?

In a forthcoming book, "Sleeping with Your Smartphone: How to Break the 24-7 Habit and Change the Way You Work," Harvard Business School professor Leslie Perlow provides insights on this fraught relationship with smart devices. In an experiment that focused on mandating time off for consultants for at least one night per week, she noticed that ? over time ? their work lives improved, and they were largely more productive. For the research subjects who followed her policy of disconnecting from work at night, 78% said that they "feel satisfied" with their jobs, compared to the group of people who ignored the policy, where only 49% noted the same sense of satisfaction. Her results show that we're creating a self-perpetuating perception that working faster is better ? even when speed may not be necessary.

The reality is that business processes have been changed by technology. Competition is now global and companies need to act fast to survive. Accordingly, we have institutionalized a system where customers and staff expect everyone to be always-connected. And with that, 24/7 speed has become a key performance metric. The impetus to examine whether what we do requires 24/7 responsiveness is overlooked. We all work longer and harder, despite the possibility that we could work better. But since everyone is doing it, it's considered acceptable.

But, here's the thing: Business will not collapse if we don't respond to e-mail at 11 PM. Waiting until 9 AM has plenty of benefits that arguably outweigh the benefits of speed, such as giving ourselves an opportunity to think through the problem and provide a better idea that customers will appreciate. Instead of acquiescing to the knee-jerk reflex of responding to every incoming message, we should put these devices in their place ? that is, to serve us, and not the other way around.

Companies need to help employees unplug. (Of course, every business is unique, and must take its own processes into consideration. But for most companies, giving employees predictable time off will not hurt the bottom line.) In my own firm, when we noticed that always-on was not producing better results, we phased it out of our culture. A policy was instituted that encouraged everyone to respect time off, and discouraged people from sending unnecessary emails and making distracting calls after hours. It's a system that works if all of the team members commit to it. Over time, we've seen a more motivated team that comes to work ready for business, and goes home to get rejuvenated. They work smarter, not blindly faster. And morale is higher.
