Spanish village may still grow pot to pay debt

MADRID (AP) ? An adviser to a Spanish village that had considered growing marijuana to pay off debt may still do so, even though 'yes' votes in a referendum prevailed but fell short of the minimum set by the mayor.

The people of Rasquera in the northeast Catalonia region voted 56 percent in favor and 44 percent against in Tuesday's referendum.

The mayor had set 75 percent as the minimum level of support, and said he would resign if this were not achieved. Now he is apparently backtracking.

Mayor Bernat Pallisa said Wednesday he is delaying any decision. The adviser, Jose Maria Insausti, said meetings of the seven-member town council over the next two days should determine if Rasquera leases land as planned for the growing of pot to pay off its ?1.3 million debt.

Autism linked to obesity in pregnancy

Association may spark research into possible biological mechanism

Obese women are more likely to have children who develop autism than are normal-weight women, a new study suggests. The finding adds another possible explanation for the apparent rise in autism.

Reporting in the May Pediatrics, researchers also found that women who were obese or had some form of diabetes during pregnancy were more likely to have kids with developmental delays other than autism. And tests show that a woman?s obesity, diabetes or high blood pressure during pregnancy might even have an effect on her otherwise healthy offspring, placing them at risk of slightly impaired learning.

The new research ?sheds light on potential risk factors for autism and underscores the importance for people who are pregnant ? or trying to get pregnant ? of controlling their risks,? says epidemiologist Hannah Gardener of the University of Miami. ?This is a very strong study.?

The authors note, however, that the findings show associations ? not causes ? of autism or developmental delays. ?We can?t establish causation from this study,? says coauthor Irva Hertz-Picciotto, an epidemiologist at the University of California, Davis. ?But it is interesting that obesity and diabetes are increasing as autism incidence is.? A recent study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed that 1 in 88 children born in the United States develops an autism spectrum disorder (SN Online: 4/3/12).

Previous studies have suggested that diabetes and hypertension in pregnancy might pose developmental risks to a fetus, but obesity has been studied less, Hertz-Picciotto says.

The researchers compared the pregnancy histories of mothers of 315 children who were developing normally, 172 children with developmental delays and 517 kids with an autism spectrum disorder ? autism, Asperger?s syndrome and other social interaction problems. Symptoms of these disorders typically include repetitive or restrictive patterns of thoughts and behavior and struggles with language, communication, physical coordination, social skills and the sharing of emotions.

Obese mothers were 67 percent more likely to have an autistic child than normal-weight, healthy moms, the data show. Diabetes in pregnancy had no effect on autism risk, but mothers who were obese or who had some form of diabetes during gestation were about twice as likely to have a child with some form of developmental delay compared with healthier moms.

Many women who were obese, diabetic or hypertensive during pregnancy had children unaffected by autism spectrum disorders or developmental delays. On average, these children scored somewhat lower on tests of learning and adaptive behaviors than the other outwardly healthy kids who had normal-weight moms.

The associations held even after researchers accounted for differences in race, education, time of year the kids were born, geographical region and mother?s age at delivery.?

The researchers could offer only speculation regarding a biological mechanism linking maternal obesity and autism risk, citing high blood sugar and high blood levels of insulin in the gestating mothers as a possible trigger for tissue damage in a fetus.

?We?ve got a long way to go in terms of figuring out environmental risk factors for autism ? and how they interact with genetics,? Gardener says. The new study might spur lab and animal research aimed at finding the underlying cause of autism and other developmental disorders, she says.

About a month after we spotted the IdeaTab S2109's FCC document, Lenovo's quietly launched a YouTube video for its 9.7-inch (1,024 x 768 IPS LCD) slate over the weekend. Why so shy? No idea, but what we do know is that on top of the deets we obtained last time, this Android 4.0 device comes in an 8.9mm-thick, gunmetal-finish unibody shell that packs a 1.3-megapixel front camera (yet no back camera), microSD slot, micro-HDMI, micro-USB and 10 hours worth of battery juice. Alas, there's no confirmation on the specific TI OMAP chipset used here, nor does the video indicate when or where we can get hold of this quad-SRS-speaker tablet; but at least it looks like we won't have to deal with any UI customization from Lenovo. Review Of Peter Max's Colors of a Better World Austin Exhibit At The ...

This review is very different from how it might have been otherwise, because before sitting down to write it I spent a lot of time imagining what our lives might look like were we able to draw on all the synchronicities of life the way artist Peter Max?clearly has. The more I looked at his work after listening to him speak, the more apparent this became to me. It was almost as if the alchemist had handed me the elixir of life, and I had but to drop it into my pocket for safekeeping.

Quite literally, I am drawn into a very small painting called ?Sage with Stick and Tree?. After the talk it seems particularly poignant. Perfect. Where the other images are bold and brawny in some cases, it pulls at the heart of things, the heart of the matter. Like ?The Wall?. Like the nephew I see riding on the back of an angel in ?The Highest Mountain?. I don?t go for a walk, although I?d thought I might, because I understand for this post I need to go within before going without.? ?Without Boarders? ? ?The White House? ? ?Liberty?: There?s some light out yet, but for now, I need to finish this. As if the angels have finally arrived, disguised as muses, thank you.

As a matter of synchronicity, I arrived just before he spoke, first about how eight commissioned Gorbachevs became 10 and then 40. How when they were unveiled in Russia, the man himself spent some 20 to 30 minutes talking to Max before squatting in front of the work and doing a Russian dance. How Mikhail?s wife said something to him in Russian that Max could only guess might have been, ?Don?t make a fool of yourself,? before he stopped, turned, and asked, ?How come 40??.?. Gorby. Now, there?s 44 Obamas, and Reagan did his own brush stroke on one of the ?tall Liberties? at the White House.

Max spoke of being approached by a young artist there, who was doing some restoration work on the Statue of Liberty. The young man acknowledged that the outside looked great, but that the statue was rusting on the inside and would one day come down ?like a stack of cards,? which got Max thinking about whom he knew who might be able to help, which ultimately led him through a friend to the home of Lee Iacocca.

The friend, whom he hadn?t talked to in five years, told him, ?He?s the guy.? He worked for Iacocca every Tuesday and Thursday on an American made line of cars, and Iaccoca?s secretary just wanted to know if Max could be there the next day and not a minute late. So in two or three weeks and several phone calls later, the project to restore Lady Liberty had a $300 million budget.

Max was there for the unveiling and says he cried four or five times, although he?s not American by birth. Then through a chance meeting with Bon Jovi and his assistant, in Russia no less, the idea to paint a jumbo jet?later?materialized. The jet has flown around the world and is still in operation. His latest project is a billion dollar Norwegian Cruise Ship, only 20 blocks from his present day studio?speaking of being at the right place at the right time.

But more than this, it?s his heart that speaks to us in volumes. Some of the titles give it away: ?Peace?, ?Better World?, ?Cherry Blossoms?. Yes, the heart of the artist is decidedly in the details.
