Simple Kitchen Improvements You Can Do This Weekend | Kode ...

Making improvements to your kitchen can enhance the look of your kitchen, while also improving its functionality. There are a number of things that can be done to a kitchen, and many of the ideas are inexpensive and can be completed in a short amount of time. The small investment of time and money can drastically change your kitchen for the better.

Cabinets are a huge part of a kitchen, and they are important in regards to storage and how a kitchen looks. Replacing cabinets is an expensive and time consuming process ? but there are a couple of things that can be done to improve your existing cabinets. One option is to install soft close cabinet hardware. This type of cabinet hardware is very easy to install, and you will never have to worry about your cabinets loudly slamming shut again. Another option is to change the exterior hardware on your cabinets. New handles in a different material or finish is a subtle, but noticeable, way to add visual interest to your kitchen.

Backsplashes are very popular right now, and there are many different materials available for creating one. Changing the walls between the counters and the bottom of the cabinets makes a kitchen look totally different, and there is no limit to the styles and colors that can be used. Tile, stone, and glass are all being used to create backsplashes right now; if you have some DIY skills you can install a backsplash yourself. If you are not familiar with how to install a backsplash, or if you do not own the proper tools, it is better to hire an experienced handyman to ensure that the project is completed properly.

If your kitchen lacks counter space you may want to invest in an island. Kitchen islands with seating solve the problem of not having enough counter space, while also adding an additional place to sit during a meal, or a place for the kids to do their homework while you?re preparing dinner. Some kitchen islands also have built-in drawers and cabinets to provide extra storage in your kitchen. Islands are widely available in home improvement stores, usually at an affordable price. They can be found in a variety of styles and materials to match your taste, as well as your kitchen?s d?cor.

Kitchens are one of the most utilized rooms in a home, so it is easy for drawers and cabinets to become cluttered and disorganized. There are many types or organizers available for use in the kitchen, and the small monetary investment can make it much easier for you to cook in your kitchen. Use drawer organizers to keep utensils and flatware in place, and consider adding shelves in your cabinets to maximize storage space while also keeping dishes, pots, and pans organized.

Consider making some of these kitchen improvements this weekend and your kitchen may just end up being the showcase that you have always dreamed it would be!

Javier Bardem's 'Skyfall' Character Will Be Unlike Any Bond Villain

'It's complex — he's not an easy guy,' actor tells MTV News on London set of 007 flick.
By Christina Garibaldi

With more than 20 movies in the franchise, the James Bond series has produced a wide range of memorable villains. From Le Chiffre in "Casino Royale" to Goldfinger to Blofeld, each Bond nemesis has tried — and failed — to take down 007.

The next villain to take on the challenge will be Silva (played by Javier Bardem), who'll try his luck against Daniel Craig's Bond in the upcoming "Skyfall." MTV News recently visited the movie's London set and we asked Bardem how Silva stacks up against Bond's long list of famed adversaries.

"I never pretend to be the best Bond villain ever, that would be too much to think of yourself," Bardem said. "I think the character — it's complex — he's not an easy guy. He's not only a villain, it's more than that, hopefully, that's what we tried to achieve.

"I'm saying this in the middle of a shooting," he emphasized. "Then the director and the editor has to make decisions and put the movie together, and then out of that is what the character will become."

Little is known about why Silva is after Bond, and Bardem wasn't about to tell us. He remained tight-lipped, saying even he was unsure how the rivalry will play out on screen.

"I don't know, we have to see the movie to see that, because I know what I've done as an actor, but I haven't seen the movie, so I cannot tell you how the movie is going to look like," Bardem said. "I have an idea I think that it is going to be a very, very exciting movie to watch."

Bardem hopes his transformation into Silva will ultimately be something fans have never before seen onscreen. "In these times, there is nothing that we haven't seen before, but I guess it's a different type of person [than] I've played before," he explained.

Bardem has good track record when it comes to playing villains: His haunting performance as Anton Chigurh in "No Country for Old Men" won him an Oscar. So what makes the actor so good at being bad?

"I see them more than villains, I see [them] like people with some circumstances behind them that make them act and react the way they do," Bardem said. "It's not only a sign you have to put on a character like, 'This is a villain.' It's a man who has some trouble going on and he has to cope with it."

"Skyfall" hits theatres this fall.

Open Office Hours With TechCrunch Europe

officeHours1Doing meetups and attending conferences is great for uncovering new startups and entrepreneurs, but sometimes you just want to sit down over coffee for a few minutes and explain what you're doing. So I'm starting a new series of one-to-one sessions which will hopefully be fairly regular (schedule allowing). I'll be doing "Open Office Hours" sessions at various locations associated with startups, and as I'm based in London that's where I'll mainly be doing them. The idea is you apply for a slot and wait for confirmation. This isn't about long meetings, it's more about getting a quick heads-up and then following up later. Next week I'll be at startup space White Bear Yard, home to Passion Capital and a number of their startups. You can sign up for a slot here. The next session after that will be at Innovation Warehouse, slots here. To follow other sessions, here's my OHours profile or follow me on Twitter, Facebook or Google+.

Is corn syrup killing the honeybees? (+video)

A trio of recent studies faults a common family of corn pesticides for disorienting honeybees, potentially leading to colony collapse disorder. The German chemical company Bayer, which manufactures the pesticides, disagrees. ?

Since 2006, something awfully strange has been happening to North America's commercial beehives. Beekeepers are finding that many of the boxed hives ranged throughout their apiaries have been inexplicably abandoned by worker bees. These ghost-hives typically have ample stores of honey and pollen, and hold gestating colony broods, sometimes even a lone queen.

Skip to next paragraph Dr Reese Halter speaks to the Daily Planet from Camerillo, Calif on the missing 50 billion honeybees.

This phenomenon is called Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), and two papers published recently in the journal Science say that it is correlated with the presence of a ubiquitous class of insecticide called neonicotinoids. A newer study published in the Bulletin of Insectology suggests that this insecticide is introduced into bee colonies through, strangely enough, high-fructose corn syrup.

The insecticide was developed by Bayer AG, the German chemical and pharmaceutical giant most recognized for its original brand of aspirin. Today, the $53 billion company has released a rebuttal to the suggested link between neonicotinoids and Colony Collapse Disorder.

The population of feral honeybees in the US has been steadily decreasing for the past half-century, and is now almost nonexistent. In the same timescale, commercial honeybees experienced a shallower decline in population. However, since 2006, they have started rapidly disappearing in North America and Europe. Many scientists agree that the confluence of factors that drove population decline before 2006 is still in effect, but that something probably changed in light of the new rash of colony collapses.

Identifying the causes of CCD is a complex proposition, but the disorder's symptoms and effects are quite simple. It usually occurs when worker bees first depart their hives to forage, in winter or early spring. Then they don't return. Their hives typically have an active queen, ample food, and a developing brood ? not exactly the home a bee would abandon under normal circumstances. Many scientists have since suggested that pesticides may disorient bees or affect their memory, making them unable to navigate home.

Chensheng Lu, an environmental scientist at Harvard and the lead author on the Bulletin of Insectology paper, was curious as to how the insecticide may be introduced into the colony, and decided to investigate high-fructose corn syrup, which for the past decade has been used by beekeepers to supplement hives that have been decanted of honey. Much of the US corn crop is treated with neonicotinoids, and so trace amounts of the insecticides can often be found in the sugary syrup.

Lu and colleagues designed an experiment that would expose hives to concentrations ranging from 20 to 400 parts per billion. Within 4 months, 15 of the 16 experimental hives had been emptied by what appeared to be CCD, according to the researchers.

As more studies are published on this subject, the link between neonicontinoids and CCD may become more apparent. In this case, Bayer AG could only be held indirectly accountable, as it is the beekeepers who are substituting the inexpensive syrup for bee honey, thereby introducing the pesticide.

Earlier today Bayer released a statement that criticized the Harvard study, asserting that the sample size was too small to be statistically significant and that the "authors ignored the scientific consensus that bee health is impaired by multiple factors, including inadequate diet, pests and parasites such as the varroa mite, microbial diseases, mismanaged colonies, and loss of genetic diversity."

These are not unreasonable criticisms. Though the study authors certainly didn't "ignore" a "scientific consensus" on the multiple factors that could cause CCD. They simply investigated one of them. Nonetheless, scientists are still puzzled by the many possible causes of the disorder. They're also concerned, and for good reason.

The common honeybee is widely recognized as the most important insect pollinator. They're extremely versatile, able to collect both nectar and pollen and to transport it. They are easily managed by beekeepers, and live year-round, which means they will service a wide variety of plants. They're also fecund; one simple colony can consist of one queen, a few hundred drones and roughly 80,000 workers. There is no realistic scenario in which we could operate our mass-scale farms without them.

Bayer's concerns about the studies are not all that surprising considering the company's financial interests. But if more research confirms that its neonicotinoids are afflicting the commercial honeybee population, then they are threatening an enterprise on which Bayer crucially depends: agriculture itself.

Return Of 'Girls' Power: HBO Series Gets It Right

Above The Buzz examines Lena Dunham's dramedy about four women living in NYC.
By Jocelyn Vena

Lena Dunham in "Girls"
Photo: HBO

Blah, blah, blah. Yes, "Girls" is a lot like "Sex and the City" in the fact that both shows are about women — four, to be exact — living, loving and working in New York City. And that's about it.

Maybe "Girls" is the best "SATC" prequel that creator Michael Patrick King never pitched: It's dark with little spots of comic relief, as these women try to figure out how to get it right. And they rarely do. They are stuck in jobs that seem to have no future and relationships that make them awful about themselves. Where "Sex" was all about how fabulous NYC is, "Girls" is all about how hard (and expensive) it can be to try and make a dream happen in a town where everyone has a dream.

Perhaps the big difference is "Girls" is created by a young woman in the throes of her own post-adolescence angst. Lena Dunham, 25, the show's creator, writer, director and star, truly understands what it feels like to be stuck in your mid-twenties struggling with the pains of having to grow up. In fact, her vision of this stage of life seems to be so spot-on that it got her an assist from the show's producer, Judd Apatow. (She previously examined those similar themes in her feature film, "Tiny Furniture.")

Not to discredit "Sex." It did an amazing job capturing life in NYC as an aspiration. You too can move to NYC, date rich, powerful dudes, afford fancy cocktails at all the hottest hot spots and glide along Fifth Avenue in Manolo Blahniks.

But first you must be one of the "Girls," who also include Allison Williams (news anchor Brian Williams' daughter) playing Type-A gallery assistant Marnie, Jemima Kirke, a flighty, free spirited Brit Jessa and Zosia Mamet, the "SATC"-loving college student Shoshanna. Dunham plays Hannah, a writer who talks a lot about her memoir without having actually done very much to get it off the ground, relying on her parents for money.

The show, which premieres Sunday on the former home of "Sex," HBO, is about trying to have it all, but not knowing how to get it. These "Girls" are from a generation of women who have been told they can do an-y-thing. But, the problem is, as most jumped straight into their careers right out of college, they never really had the time to nail down what it is they want.

This confusion leaks into their personal lives, where they battle depression and self-esteem issues. They date men they don't care much about or who don't care much about them. It's an interesting breakdown of the current state of girl power: Can these girls really do an-y-thing?

Well, Dunham and her pals are certainly trying to figure that out, one episode at a time.

Are you planning on watching "Girls"? Leave your comment below!

Which came last, the dinosaur or the egg?

Scientists unearthed remains of a new kind of dinosaur and its eggs in Patagonia recently. The fossil find provides fresh clues to the past.

New evidence suggests that mama dinosaur likely perished at the same time as her eggs.

Researchers in Patagonia recently found skeletal remains of a newly designated genus of dinosaur ? Bonapartenykus ??near two broken eggshells. Examinations of the bones and eggs suggest that they may have been inside the creature at the time of her death.?

"So it looks like we have indirect evidence for keeping two eggs in two oviducts," Kundr?t told LiveScience. "They were close to being laid, but the female didn't make it."

Or maybe not. Other information gathered from shards of eggshells discovered later indicates that some of the eggs had been incubated, and therefore contained embryos at an advanced stage of development. In other words, some of the eggs may have been in the nest, not in the dinosaur.

Though the location of the eggs at the time of the mother's death remains uncertain, the 70-million-year-old fossils hold several more clues to the past.

The remains are from the birdlike dino which belonged to a group of dinosaurs known as the Alvarezsauridae. It's known as Bonapartenykus ultimus, named in honor of Jos? Bonaparte, discoverer of the first alvarezsaurid in Patagonia in 1991.

Measuring eight and a half feet long, it was one of the largest members of the family.?The feathered bipeds possessed birdlike skulls, small jaws with teeth, and strong but short arms that ended with a?sizable claw.

The eggs found with the mother's remains are unique, so researchers designated a new type of dinosaur egg?called Arraigadoolithidae,?named for Alberto Arraigada?the owner of the site where the specimen was discovered.

When Kundr?t, a dinosaur expert from Uppsala University in Sweden, examined the eggshells, he noticed what "turned out to be the first evidence of fungal contamination of dinosaur eggs."

Kundr?t told LiveScience of his discovery, "It looks like at the very late stage the eggs could suffer from the same contamination as in common birds."

These findings will be published in the June 2012 edition of the journal Cretaceous Research. The article is available online now.

Biergert & Funk bring the literal time to your wristwatch with QLOCKTWO W
It's a common desire among everyday folk: we often say we'd like to read more, if only we had the time. American Idol Results: Elimination Night Shocker!

American Idol treated us to seven great performances last night.

But the remaining finalists were forced to look ahead on this evening's results show, as America voted and revealed an inevitable, but sad result for one aspirant:

He or she is going home. Who's on to the top six and who's out?

American Idol Top 7

It looked briefly like fan favorite Phillip Phillips might be in danger, but it came down to a surprising bottom three: Jessica Sanchez, Joshua Ledet and Elise Testone.

That's right, arguably the three best singers remaining on the show were in danger of getting booted, making for the most gut-wrenching elimination this year.

The contestant getting the boot this week was an even bigger stunner, too. Who was it? You're not going to believe it, but the lowest vote-getter was ...

Jessica Sanchez.

The studio erupted in chaos at this news, but as she began to sing for her life, she was interrupted by Jennifer Lopez, who informed her that she had been ...

SAVED by the judges!!

There it is, the one and only judges' save of the season, used on a powerhouse performer who definitely didn't deserve to be in danger, let alone go home.

"We are saving Jessica, without a doubt!" Randy said as the judges engulfed her. "This girl is one of the best singers in America! Ever! Are you kidding me!"

"Everybody, please vote for the best! Come on!"

It remains to be seen if America will heed his words a week from now, but for now, all seven singers survive heading into next Wednesday's Top 7: Reloaded.

What do you think? Did the judges make the right call?

The unique privilege of jumpsuiting up and prowling the Foxconn factory floor may be reserved for the likes of Tim Cook and Nightline's Bill Weir, but thanks to American Public Media's Marketplace, we can all take a peek at the iPad production line. The above video is part of Rob Schmitz' ongoing look at Foxconn's factory conditions. Schmitz is partially responsible for debunking Mike Daisey's "theatrical" deception, and now hopes to educate readers on the reality of Foxconn's Longhua facility.

"When I gave examples of some of the American media coverage of the working conditions at Foxconn, many workers laughed, telling me it's not really that bad" Schmitz writes. "But that doesn't mean the workers don't have complaints." Through a series of interviews, Schmitz unveils how workers feel about their supervisors, jobs, pay, family back home and their dreams for the future. So, how's that iPad made? Check out the source link below, and find out.

Spanish village may still grow pot to pay debt

(AP) ? An adviser to a Spanish village that had considered growing marijuana to pay off debt may still do so, even though 'yes' votes in a referendum prevailed but fell short of the minimum set by the mayor.

The people of Rasquera in the northeast Catalonia region voted 56 percent in favor and 44 percent against in Tuesday's referendum.

The mayor had set 75 percent as the minimum level of support, and said he would resign if this were not achieved. Now he is apparently backtracking.

Mayor Bernat Pallisa said Wednesday he is delaying any decision. The adviser, Jose Maria Insausti, said meetings of the seven-member town council over the next two days should determine if Rasquera leases land as planned for the growing of pot to pay off its ?1.3 million debt.

Autism linked to obesity in pregnancy

Association may spark research into possible biological mechanism

Web edition : 3:43 pm

Obese women are more likely to have children who develop autism than are normal-weight women, a new study suggests. The finding adds another possible explanation for the apparent rise in autism.

Reporting in the May Pediatrics, researchers also found that women who were obese or had some form of diabetes during pregnancy were more likely to have kids with developmental delays other than autism. And tests show that a woman?s obesity, diabetes or high blood pressure during pregnancy might even have an effect on her otherwise healthy offspring, placing them at risk of slightly impaired learning.

The new research ?sheds light on potential risk factors for autism and underscores the importance for people who are pregnant ? or trying to get pregnant ? of controlling their risks,? says epidemiologist Hannah Gardener of the University of Miami. ?This is a very strong study.?

The authors note, however, that the findings show associations ? not causes ? of autism or developmental delays. ?We can?t establish causation from this study,? says coauthor Irva Hertz-Picciotto, an epidemiologist at the University of California, Davis. ?But it is interesting that obesity and diabetes are increasing as autism incidence is.? A recent study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed that 1 in 88 children born in the United States develops an autism spectrum disorder (SN Online: 4/3/12).

Previous studies have suggested that diabetes and hypertension in pregnancy might pose developmental risks to a fetus, but obesity has been studied less, Hertz-Picciotto says.

The researchers compared the pregnancy histories of mothers of 315 children who were developing normally, 172 children with developmental delays and 517 kids with an autism spectrum disorder ? autism, Asperger?s syndrome and other social interaction problems. Symptoms of these disorders typically include repetitive or restrictive patterns of thoughts and behavior and struggles with language, communication, physical coordination, social skills and the sharing of emotions.

Obese mothers were 67 percent more likely to have an autistic child than normal-weight, healthy moms, the data show. Diabetes in pregnancy had no effect on autism risk, but mothers who were obese or who had some form of diabetes during gestation were about twice as likely to have a child with some form of developmental delay compared with healthier moms.

Many women who were obese, diabetic or hypertensive during pregnancy had children unaffected by autism spectrum disorders or developmental delays. On average, these children scored somewhat lower on tests of learning and adaptive behaviors than the other outwardly healthy kids who had normal-weight moms.

The associations held even after researchers accounted for differences in race, education, time of year the kids were born, geographical region and mother?s age at delivery.?

The researchers could offer only speculation regarding a biological mechanism linking maternal obesity and autism risk, citing high blood sugar and high blood levels of insulin in the gestating mothers as a possible trigger for tissue damage in a fetus.

?We?ve got a long way to go in terms of figuring out environmental risk factors for autism ? and how they interact with genetics,? Gardener says. The new study might spur lab and animal research aimed at finding the underlying cause of autism and other developmental disorders, she says.

Lenovo's IdeaTab S2109 unveiled on YouTube, shows off 8.9mm-thick unibody shell

Lenovo's IdeaTab S2109 unveiled on YouTube, shows off 8.9mm-thick unibody shell
About a month after we spotted the IdeaTab S2109's FCC document, Lenovo's quietly launched a YouTube video for its 9.7-inch (1,024 x 768 IPS LCD) slate over the weekend. Why so shy? No idea, but what we do know is that on top of the deets we obtained last time, this Android 4.0 device comes in an 8.9mm-thick, gunmetal-finish unibody shell that packs a 1.3-megapixel front camera (yet no back camera), microSD slot, micro-HDMI, micro-USB and 10 hours worth of battery juice. Alas, there's no confirmation on the specific TI OMAP chipset used here, nor does the video indicate when or where we can get hold of this quad-SRS-speaker tablet; but at least it looks like we won't have to deal with any UI customization from Lenovo. For now, enjoy said video clip after the break.

Review Of Peter Max's Colors of a Better World Austin Exhibit At The ...

This review is very different from how it might have been otherwise, because before sitting down to write it I spent a lot of time imagining what our lives might look like were we able to draw on all the synchronicities of life the way artist Peter Max?clearly has. The more I looked at his work after listening to him speak, the more apparent this became to me. It was almost as if the alchemist had handed me the elixir of life, and I had but to drop it into my pocket for safekeeping.

Quite literally, I am drawn into a very small painting called ?Sage with Stick and Tree?. After the talk it seems particularly poignant. Perfect. Where the other images are bold and brawny in some cases, it pulls at the heart of things, the heart of the matter. Like ?The Wall?. Like the nephew I see riding on the back of an angel in ?The Highest Mountain?. I don?t go for a walk, although I?d thought I might, because I understand for this post I need to go within before going without.? ?Without Boarders? ? ?The White House? ? ?Liberty?: There?s some light out yet, but for now, I need to finish this. As if the angels have finally arrived, disguised as muses, thank you.

As a matter of synchronicity, I arrived just before he spoke, first about how eight commissioned Gorbachevs became 10 and then 40. How when they were unveiled in Russia, the man himself spent some 20 to 30 minutes talking to Max before squatting in front of the work and doing a Russian dance. How Mikhail?s wife said something to him in Russian that Max could only guess might have been, ?Don?t make a fool of yourself,? before he stopped, turned, and asked, ?How come 40??.?. Gorby. Now, there?s 44 Obamas, and Reagan did his own brush stroke on one of the ?tall Liberties? at the White House.

Max spoke of being approached by a young artist there, who was doing some restoration work on the Statue of Liberty. The young man acknowledged that the outside looked great, but that the statue was rusting on the inside and would one day come down ?like a stack of cards,? which got Max thinking about whom he knew who might be able to help, which ultimately led him through a friend to the home of Lee Iacocca.

The friend, whom he hadn?t talked to in five years, told him, ?He?s the guy.? He worked for Iacocca every Tuesday and Thursday on an American made line of cars, and Iaccoca?s secretary just wanted to know if Max could be there the next day and not a minute late. So in two or three weeks and several phone calls later, the project to restore Lady Liberty had a $300 million budget.

Max was there for the unveiling and says he cried four or five times, although he?s not American by birth. Then through a chance meeting with Bon Jovi and his assistant, in Russia no less, the idea to paint a jumbo jet?later?materialized. The jet has flown around the world and is still in operation. His latest project is a billion dollar Norwegian Cruise Ship, only 20 blocks from his present day studio?speaking of being at the right place at the right time.

But more than this, it?s his heart that speaks to us in volumes. Some of the titles give it away: ?Peace?, ?Better World?, ?Cherry Blossoms?. Yes, the heart of the artist is decidedly in the details.
